  • 21 June 2023

Philippines’ City of Makati becomes the latest signatory to ICLEI’s 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact, and the newest participant of the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network!

Makati is already actively participating and showcasing its leadership on a global stage, with Mayor Mar-Len Abigail S. Binay holding the Regional Seat for Southeast Asia in ICLEI’s Global Executive Committee (GexCom).

Makati is now tackling the challenge of local climate and energy action, having already declared a climate emergency in 2022. Now, with a commitment to renewable energy, it can continue its projects to install solar panels in public buildings, while simultaneously improving the city’s resilience in the face of the worsening impacts of climate change. Highlighting the importance of energy efficiency, Makati also has various incentives to improve the energy efficiency of its buildings and provide benefits to developers that incorporate renewable energy in their buildings. Sustainable forms of mobility are also top priorities for the City of Makati.

Joining the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact and the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network will give Makati additional visibility to attract resources to makes its renewable energy transition possible, while also providing access to peer exchange opportunities and knowledge sharing with other committed local and regional governments.

Through the Energy Compacts, launched at the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on Energy in September 2021, Makati will also be able to access the Energy Compact Action Network and other assistance from UN-Energy. This will allow for cooperation with other Energy Compacts, all with the interest in achieving SDG7 by 2030 and enhancing its energy action.
