100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact

ICLEI’s 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact was officially launched at the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on Energy. It calls for local and regional governments to make ambitious voluntary commitments to catapult themselves towards 100% renewable energy use at the latest by 2050.

Energy Compacts are supported by UN-Energy, and bring together various actors committing to provide support for energy access, transition and efficiency improvements in energy infrastructures, to enhance access to electricity for more than 2.3 billion people worldwide, as well as to clean cooking possibilities for 216 million people and improvements in energy efficiency and savings.

Targets

Signatories can commit to a number of interim targets on the road to 100% renewables:

  • 30% renewable energy use in final energy consumption by 2030
  • 100% renewable energy use in local operations by 2030
  • Achieving SDG7 by 2030: 100% clean cooking and electricity access

Reporting

All reporting is carried out through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. ICLEI will report progress on the Energy Compact in an aggregated manner to UN-Energy annually. Cities must ideally answer at least the following questions:

  • Questions 3.1–3.4 on the energy sector
  • Question 6.1 on sectoral targets

As of 2023, the signatories for ICLEI's Energy Compact are:

  • Nakuru County, Kenya
  • West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia
  • Kisumu County, Kenya
  • Avellaneda, Argentina
  • Makati City, Philippines

100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Network

Local and regional governments worldwide are setting renewable energy targets.
