About

About the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Roadmap

This project facilitates the energy transition by raising local awareness on renewable energy sources, showcasing how local and national governments can create coordinated enabling frameworks and policies, exploring access to public and private sector finance, and building local renewable energy projects to address electricity, heating and cooling.

By working with local and regional governments from Argentina, Indonesia and Kenya, the project fosters multilevel governance, and puts that collaboration at the heart of the sustainable energy transition.

Aims

The 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Roadmap projects aims to:

  • Support nine cities and regions in three countries to develop a roadmap towards 100% renewable energy and effectively implement local climate and energy action.
  • Enable the participating local and regional governments to develop financially viable and bankable renewable energy projects and explore access to public and private investment.
  • Contribute to the respective national climate and energy targets, as reflected in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
  • Support local policy development that enhances energy security, improves energy efficiency and stimulates the local economy.

Activities

The project is supporting selected local and regional governments in Argentina, Indonesia and Kenya to:

  • Build capacity and provide technical support to develop a community-wide 100% RE strategy and action plan
  • Model and assess local renewable energy potential
  • Identify priority projects with local and regional governments to be developed into bankable projects
  • Explore access to public and private finance for implementation of the local priority projects
  • Raise awareness on the need for action and the RE options available
  • Ensure stakeholder engagement and buy-in for the local action plan
  • Create opportunities for peer-learning and exchange on renewable energy, financing, multi-level governance and partnerships
  • Provide guidance for local and regional governments around the globe on how to define a 100% renewable energy roadmap, by making available methodologies, tools and other resources

Outcomes

Through the 100% Renewables Roadmap project, cities and regions are:

  • Producing a locally specific strategy and action plan, or roadmap, towards achieving 100% renewable energy
  • Building local capacity to assess local renewable energy potential and implement renewable solutions
  • Developing financially viable and bankable renewable energy projects and explore access to public and private investment
