Cities and regions get on board with new renewable energy project

  • 07 February 2020

Nine cities and regions, three each from Argentina, Indonesia and Kenya, have joined ICLEI’s 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Roadmap project.

These local governments are taking a critical step towards facilitating the energy transition:

  • City of Avellaneda, Argentina
  • City of Rosario, Argentina
  • City of La Plata, Argentina
  • West Nusa Tenggara (WNT), Indonesia
  • Mataram City, Indonesia
  • Sumbawa Regency, Indonesia
  • Kisumu County, Kenya
  • Nakuru County, Kenya
  • Mombasa County, Kenya

Through the project, they are working with ICLEI to raise awareness of renewable energy sources and show how local, regional and national governments can create coordinated enabling frameworks and policies towards achieving 100% renewable energy.

And at the same time, they will reap the benefits of increased uptake of renewable energy in their communities.

We are eager to take advantage of the many synergies between on-going provincial programs and the 100% Renewables Roadmap project” said Sitti Rohmi Djalilah, Vice Governor of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.  “For instance, the project will strengthen the Energy Independent Village Program and support standard procedure for households to better maintain renewable energy facilities while raising education and awareness of the potential of renewable energy, Djalilah continued.

The project will provide technical support for participating cities and regions to explore access to public and private sector finance, and building local renewable energy projects that address electricity, heating and cooling.
