Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, recently joined ICLEI’s 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network

As a hub of industrial global corporations like Samsung, Hyundai, Kai, and SK Hynix, Gyeonggi-do is uniquely positioned to lead the renewable energy transition. By addressing the importance of renewable energy while improving access to sustainable and modern energy, Gyeonggi-do launched the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Vision’ in 2023. The initiative aims to enhance a share of renewable energy generation from 5.8% in 2021 to 30% in 2030 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40%. Ultimately, Gyeonggi-do plans to connect all community members–public domains, private companies, and residents to create a sustainable energy community.

Gyeonggi-do’s case highlights the potential of local energy policies to lead communities to transition towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future while promoting self-sufficiency and providing monetary rewards that create social value.

Gyeonggi-do is active in the global sustainability space, setting an inclusive approach to tackling climate issues and aligning with South Korea’s national goals for green growth and carbon neutrality.

By joining the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network, Gyeonggi-do gains additional visibility, access to resources, and opportunities for peer exchange and knowledge sharing. This exciting prospect can help make Gyeonggi-do’s renewable energy transition a reality.
