Ukraine’s Zhytomyr joins ICLEI’s 100% Renewables initiatives!

  • 05 September 2023

Zhytomyr, Ukraine became the latest city to join ICLEI’s ICLEI’s 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact, as well as becoming part of the broader 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network

Emphasizing the importance of energy conservation in preserving its identity and independence, Zhytomyr has been actively developing its local energy policies since 2012. The policy focuses on increasing energy efficiency and transitioning to renewable and alternative fuels. Zhytomyr ultimately aims to be the first climate-neutral city in Ukraine by 2050 powered by 100% renewable energy, and has already reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 40% in 2022 compared to its chosen baseline.

Zhytomyr’s case highlights the potential of local energy policies to lead communities towards climate neutrality, while addressing energy deficits, energy costs, and promoting self-sufficiency.

Zhytomyr is active in the global sustainability space already, having been a signatory of the European Covenant of Mayors.

Joining the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Energy Compact and the 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network gives Zhytomyr additional visibility to attract resources to makes its renewable energy transition possible, while also providing access to peer exchange opportunities and knowledge sharing with other committed local and regional governments.

Through the Energy Compacts, launched at the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on Energy in September 2021, Makati will also be able to access the Energy Compact Action Network and other assistance from UN-Energy. This will allow for cooperation with other Energy Compacts, all with the interest in achieving SDG7 by 2030 and enhancing its energy action.
